Proposed New 6-8th Grade and 9-12th Science Curriculums

Science faculty at Brookings-Harbor High School and Azalea Middle School presented updated science curriculum proposals to the Brookings-Harbor School District Board of Directors at the May 2024 Regular Board Meeting. These proposals detail the printed and digital textbooks, as well as the online and printable curriculum materials, that will be used starting with the 2024-2025 school year.

Curriculum Proposals:

Commonalities in Both Curriculum Proposals:

  1. Digital and Paper Flexibility: Both curriculums offer digital and paper options to accommodate different learning preferences. The AMS curriculum uses the Stile app, which integrates well with Chromebooks. Discovery Education provides digital content that can be printed for those who prefer paper assignments.
  2. Student Engagement and Customization: Both curriculums focus on engaging students with interactive, current material. The AMS curriculum highlights Stile’s engaging, customizable content that includes local phenomena. Discovery Education offers interactive labs, videos, and easily modifiable content.
  3. Accessibility and Inclusivity: Both proposals prioritize accessibility for diverse student populations. Stile is user-friendly for both students and teachers. Discovery Education includes features like adjustable reading levels, speech-to-text, and embedded Spanish text to support ELL students.
  4. Curriculum Updates and Relevance: Both curriculums are designed to stay current with scientific developments. Stile continuously updates its material with current science and world news. Discovery Education regularly updates its content to ensure it remains relevant and up-to-date.
  5. Ease of Use for Teachers and Substitutes: Both curriculums are easy for teachers and substitutes to use. The AMS curriculum emphasizes the support from Stile’s team in lesson development. Discovery Education integrates seamlessly with Canvas LMS, making it easy for substitutes to navigate and teach the lessons.
