Bruins Athletics Fields and Track Set To Get Major Upgrades This Summer

The Brookings-Harbor School District is excited to start work on a new multipurpose turf field and track resurfacing project at Brookings-Harbor High School in May 2024. The project vision and support was made possible thanks to the leadership and generosity of South Coast Lumber Co. & Affiliates, Tidewater Contractors, and the Brookings Harbor Booster Club in partnership with the District.

What's Happening:

  • Elmer Bankus Stadium’s grass field will be transformed into a top-notch synthetic turf field. This will be great for football, soccer, track and field, marching band and color guard and other intramural sports and school activities.
  • The running track will get a complete resurfacing with new materials that will last longer, as well as in upgrade to field event areas such as long jump, high jump, pole vault, shotput and javelin.
  • The new field and track will reflect Bruin Pride with custom colors and markings.
  • The softball in-field, and football practice field areas will get an upgrade during the same construction time frame using school district funds.

The Plan:

The construction will start in May 2024 and aim to finish by Fall 2024. Beynon Sports and FieldTurf are design and construction firms constracted to facilitate this large-scale project. While building is in progress, the Class of 2024 will celebrate its graduation at Lundeen Field at Azalea Park on June 8, 2024. Additionally, the area around the high school stadiums will be off limits during Summer 2024 due to the construction.

Special Thanks to these Project Partners:

Why It Matters:

This project shows what we can do when we work together with Bruin Pride. The completion will mark the start of a new era of quality facilities for our student athletes and community. These upgrades are a commitment to safer, better athletics and activities facilities for years to come, where our students and community can make memories, achieve individual and team successes,  thrive and be healthy.

BROOKINGS-HARBOR SCHOOL DISTRICT RESOLUTION NO. 2025-001

Naming the SOCOMI Sports Complex at Brookings-Harbor High School

RECITALS A. The Brookings-Harbor School District (BHSD) recognizes the significant role that the naming of school facilities plays in fostering community pride, acknowledging philanthropy, and honoring the legacy of individuals who have made substantial contributions to the school and the community.

B. In 2024, BHSD initiated a major renovation project at Brookings-Harbor High School, transforming the football field (known as Elmer Bankus Field) into a modern synthetic turf multipurpose field and resurfacing the surrounding track. This project was made possible through collaboration with South Coast Lumber Co. & Affiliates, Tidewater Contractors, the Brookings-Harbor Booster Club, and other community partners.

C. South Coast Lumber Co. & Affiliates, in honor of the legacy of former CEO, Ron Fallert and the company’s long-standing heritage, generously provided the financial resources for this state-of-the-art facility. This contribution will greatly enhance the experience of student-athletes, the school, and the community for years to come. Ron Fallert, a proud alumnus of Brookings-Harbor High School and a member of its very first football team, led the company as part of the second generation of his family. His unwavering support of community projects and Bruins Athletics continues under the leadership of the third generation.

D. In recognition of Fallert’s lasting impact on the lumber industry and his dedication to the local community, the newly developed area will be named the SOCOMI Sports Complex. Previously named areas within the complex, such as Elmer Bankus Field and the Jayne P. Gibney Indoor Center, will retain their established names, preserving the history of other community benefactors.

E. The BHSD Board of Directors expresses its gratitude to the many community members whose vision, time, and resources have made this outstanding project possible and reaffirms its long-term commitment to the upkeep and care of these new multipurpose turf field and resurfaced track and field facilities.

RESOLVED

  1. The Brookings-Harbor School District Board of Directors extends its deepest gratitude to South Coast Lumber Co. & Affiliates for their generous contribution to the development of the new athletic facilities at Brookings-Harbor High School.

  2. The newly completed facility, which includes the grandstands, track, field, practice field, and nearby athletic areas, shall be officially named the "SOCOMI Sports Complex," in honor of Ron Fallert – South Coast Lumber Co. & Affiliates – and significant contributions to the Brookings-Harbor community.

  3. This resolution shall take effect immediately, and the Brookings-Harbor School District will proceed with the installation of signage and public recognition in accordance with this resolution.

PASSED AND ADOPTED on September 18, 2024, by the Brookings-Harbor School District Board of Education.
