Our Commitment to Student Wellness
Brookings-Harbor School District 17C is committed to providing a healthy school environment that promotes and protects student health, social and emotional well-being, and academic success. We believe that:
Every child should have:
- Access to nutritious, appealing meals
- Opportunities for daily physical activity
- A positive, safe learning environment
- Education about making healthy choices
Good nutrition and physical activity are essential for students to grow, learn, and thrive. Our comprehensive wellness approach supports the whole child by integrating nutrition education, meal programs, physical activity, and health services throughout our schools.
Wellness Policy & Implementation Plan
The district's wellness efforts are guided by two key documents:
Board Policy EFA - Local Wellness Policy
Our School Board has adopted Policy EFA, which establishes the district's commitment to student wellness and sets requirements for nutrition, physical activity, and wellness promotion in our schools.

Local Wellness Plan
The Local Wellness Plan is our detailed implementation framework that translates Board Policy EFA into specific actions, timelines, goals, and measurable outcomes. This working document guides our day-to-day wellness activities and is reviewed and updated regularly.
What We Provide
School Meal Programs
We participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP), providing nutritious meals that meet federal nutrition standards:
- Breakfast - Available daily at all schools
- Lunch - Served daily at all schools
- Fresh Fruit & Vegetable Program - When available
- Summer Food Service Program - Information distributed annually
All meals meet USDA nutrition standards under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
Nutrition Education & Promotion
Students receive age-appropriate nutrition education as part of comprehensive health education, aligned with Oregon Health Education Standards. We promote healthy eating through:
- Classroom nutrition lessons
- Cafeteria displays and messaging
- Family resources and newsletters
- Taste testing and school gardens (when available)
Physical Activity & Physical Education
All students participate in quality physical education taught by licensed instructors:
- Grades K-5: Minimum 150 minutes per week
- Grades 6-8: Average 150 minutes per week
- At least 50% of PE class time devoted to actual physical activity
- Additional opportunities through recess, classroom activity breaks, and extracurricular activities
Water Access
Free, safe, unflavored drinking water is available to all students throughout the school day at every school campus, including during meal times.
Community Involvement
We actively encourage participation from families, students, staff, and community members in the ongoing development and implementation of our wellness policy and plan. Your input helps us create healthier schools for all students.
Ways to Get Involved:
- Participate in our annual wellness survey (distributed in March)
- Attend School Board meetings where wellness is discussed
- Contact the Wellness Coordinator with questions or suggestions
- Join building-level wellness activities and events
Triennial Assessment
The district conducts a comprehensive wellness assessment every three years to evaluate our progress and identify areas for improvement.

Q: What are the nutrition standards for school meals?
All meals served through our school meal programs meet USDA nutrition standards as required by federal law. These standards ensure meals are balanced, nutritious, and appropriate for growing children.
Q: Can my child get free or reduced-price meals?
Yes! Families may apply for free or reduced-price meals based on household income. Applications are available at the beginning of the school year and any time throughout the year. Contact the Food Service Director for more information.
Q: What foods can be sold at school during the school day?
All foods and beverages sold to students during the school day must meet USDA Smart Snacks nutrition standards and Oregon Smart Snacks Standards. This includes vending machines, school stores, fundraisers, and other sales.
Q: How can I learn more about what my child is eating at school?
Monthly menus are available on the district website and distributed to families. You're also welcome to visit during lunch to see our meal service in action.
Q: Does the district accommodate food allergies and special dietary needs?
Yes. We work with families and healthcare providers to accommodate students with documented food allergies and special dietary needs. Please contact the Food Service Director to discuss your child's specific needs.
