BHSD to Celebrate National School Lunch Week Oct. 14-18

Brookings-Harbor School District (BHSD) is excited to celebrate National School Lunch Week for the first time. BHSD is proud to be a Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) District, which means all students receive free meals. The district is dedicated to providing healthy, nutritious meals through its participation in several programs, including Farm to School, the Department of Defense’s Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program, Breakfast After the Bell, and Summer Foods.

BHSD's elementary, middle, and high schools each offer two salad bars that feature a wide variety of seasonal vegetables, fruits, legumes, proteins, grains, and homemade salads. The high school has recently added a deli bar, where students can choose from five different sandwiches and personalize them with items like sprouts, avocado, pepperoncinis, and more.

As Nutrition Director, I am committed to bringing a wide range of new and exciting foods to the students' meals. Our menu has included crab ceviche, breaded alligator bites, smoked salmon cucumber bites, a crawfish boil, Korean street tacos, chicken caprese sandwiches, jicama, mushrooms, kumquats, rainbow carrots, and colored cabbage. Our goal is to provide students with a memorable meal experience, incorporating locally sourced ingredients such as fresh-caught tuna, local beef, and dairy products from just across the state border.

To celebrate National School Lunch Week, which runs from October 14-18, the elementary and middle schools have provided a national school lunch activity guide, a handmade treasure map, and October’s menu, along with daily activities that students can enjoy throughout the week. We are looking forward to making this week a fun and engaging way to highlight the importance of school meals in fueling students' learning and well-being.

Community Resources to help meet basic needs

About SNAP
Administered by ODHS, SNAP is a federal program that provides food assistance to approximately 1 million eligible, low-income families and individuals in Oregon, including many older adults and people with disabilities. Oregonians in need can apply for benefits, including SNAP, child care, cash assistance and Medicaid. Learn more at https://govstatus.egov.com/or-dhs-benefits. For local resources in your area, such as food or shelter, please call 2-1-1 or reach out to the state’s Aging and Disability Resource Connection (ADRC) at 1-855-ORE-ADRC or 1-855-673-2372.

About S-EBT

(Salem, OR) - As summer begins to wind down, families have a limited window to secure essential food assistance through the new Summer EBT program. The program offers $120 per child to help cover grocery costs when school food programs are not as easy to access. With the application deadline quickly approaching on Sept. 2, 2024, it's crucial for eligible families to act now.

Thousands of families may be unaware that they qualify for this essential benefit. The Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) and the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) are urging families to check their eligibility and apply before the deadline. Remember, once benefits are received, you have 122 days to use them.

Most eligible children received their benefits automatically on June 28, 2024, if their households:

  • Participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Participate in Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
  • Are Oregon Health Plan (Medicaid) members in households with incomes under 185 percent of the Federal Poverty Level

Children in foster care also automatically received Summer EBT.

However, families who did not receive benefits automatically, particularly those with children in Head Start programs that participate in the National School Lunch or School Breakfast Programs, should still apply to determine their eligibility.

Families are encouraged to visit sebt.oregon.gov or contact the Summer EBT Call Center at 833-ORE-SEBT (833-673-7328) to verify their eligibility and apply. ODHS Director Fariborz Pakseresht said, “Making sure children have access to nutritious food throughout the summer is critical. This small action could provide significant support to families in Oregon.”

Free or Low-Cost Internet Services Available to All Households with Kids at Schools Participating in the Community Eligibility Provision

In the 21st century, high-speed internet is a necessity – especially for students. That’s why the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law created the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) to lower internet costs. The ACP provides eligible households a discount of up to $30 per month off their internet bills (or up to $75 per month for households living on Tribal lands), as well as a one-time discount of up to $100 off an eligible connected device like a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet. In many cases, households can get high-speed internet without paying a dime by choosing a fully covered internet plan. On August 8, 2022, the Food and Nutrition Service published a PartnerWeb announcement to promote participation in the ACP. This letter is a reminder that a household is eligible to participate in the ACP if a child in the household receives free or reduced-price school meals. Therefore, every household with a child attending a school participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program is eligible for ACP benefits. Households can learn more and apply for the ACP at GetInternet.gov.
Please pick up a free-and-reduced paper application at any school office and fill it out to help qualify for P-EBT, and to help our schools document the requirements for Provision 2 status - the programs that provide meals free of charge.

The virtual application "Mealtime Online" is not available at this time.
